The battery usually contains thick plates composed of active material with high density. These thick plates enable the storage of reserve energy deep within the battery and its gradual release during slow discharges, such as in trolling or solar applications. The high density material remains within the battery's plate/grid structure for a longer duration, thereby resisting the typical degradation experienced during cycling. This type of battery is commonly employed for extensive discharge and subsequent recharging. It employs a distinct chemical composition for the active paste material in the plates, along with a slightly stronger acid. This chemical makeup significantly extends the battery's lifespan when used in deep cycle applications, albeit with a slight reduction in maximum power output.
